Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (AAVIN)
Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited popularly called by its brand name Aavin was started on the ‘cooperative white revolution model’ created in Anand, Gujarat. The brand name of this revolution in Anand is Amul. Everybody in India knows Amul. As it started in the town of Anand, it is called Anand Pattern. Anand Pattern is the brain child of Dr.Verghese Kurien. He was the sculptor behind this great white revolution in India.
‘Maximizing farmer profit and productivity through cooperative effort’ is the motto of the Anand Pattern. Aavin, in Tamil Nadu, captures the same soul and spirit of Anand Pattern in all its activities. Aavin is an integrated cooperative organization that procures milk, processes it and markets milk produce. It has a professional management.
Milk producers decide their own business policies and adopt latest production and marketing techniques. By this cooperative effort, all pains of villagers living based on the milk business have been washed away.
Aavin has a three-tier cooperative structure namely, village society, the district union, and the state federation. It has also formed a dairy development department for carrying out the following functions related to milk business:
- Provision of free veterinary health covers to all animals owned by milk cooperatives,
- Implementation of Artificial Insemination Program
- Supply of balanced cattle feed
- Inculcation of farmers with the modern animal husbandry practices
- Creation of infrastructure for marketing milk and milk products
- Supply of quality milk to the consumer
- Establishment of chilling centers and pasteurization plants
- Adoption of the modern processing system
To encourage the women members in the dairy sector, the ‘women milk producers’ cooperative societies’ were formed in their respective locations. Now, more than 1500 women cooperative milk societies are functioning in Tamil Nadu.
