The mere figures of 300,000 jobs coming up in a year in the Knowledge Process Outsourcing industry is an indication of how big this sector is going to be in the future. Considered as a cousin of the BPO sector, KPO is going to be the next big thing in the country. Those, who are literate about these kinds of jobs, are of the opinion, or rather of the belief that this particular sector is going to be a major employer in India. Some irrefutable reasons are working behind the rapid accession ofIndiaas a power in the knowledge based job sector.

–        After the laying down of the KPO concept in the 2000, the growth has been tremendous. It was an appalling figure when the projected growth of KPO jobs in India were pegged to about 250,000 by the year 2010, which was probably a rise in the projections from previous years by about 45%. But the figures crossed well beyond the projected recruitments as Indian people and KPO companies got involved in a blend that has brought this particular industry into focus.

–        With an educated population which consists of about 3,000,000 students passing out from about 200 universities in India, every year, it is obvious that there is no dearth of knowledge in the country. For an industry that entirely depends on specific knowledge for carrying out different works, the KPO has a huge potential for prospective career paths.

–        One can find almost all types of courses to be taught in the universities and colleges and much stress is being laid down on the science subjects. Technical and professional courses being imparted in the colleges are responsible for the large number of graduates in these sectors. Since KPO industries are in search of educated people in these subjects, they are in demand by the companies dealing in knowledge process outsourcing.

–        The same factor, which helped BPO industry grow in India, is also responsible for the choice of KPO companies to start their branches in the country. This factor is the easy availability of cheap workforce and people who have good knowledge of English and their professional subjects.

Since the work related to KPO is a high end job, the services which are possibly provided are related to research and development, training and consultancy, legal services, intellectual property rights and research, medical facilities, writing and content development, pharmaceutical and biotechnology, advanced web applications, to name a few.

The field of KPO has been such that certain features are necessary in those who are going for a career in this industry. The very first point is about the proficiency in communication because technical knowledge would be frequently required to be imparted to others. Strong command over English and enunciation ability are a must in such recruits. Research based analysis and computer skills would be the necessary requirements for a career in KPO. Job specific skills such as ability to write and create case reports, analysis of raw data and streamline the information for further disbursement, and the attitude and aptitude to work in a new field are some of the criteria that are necessary for people who are interested to make it big in the KPO sector.

People with different professional backgrounds can create a niche space for themselves by entering into careers in KPO as soon as possible. Therefore, one can see a wide range of professionals such as accountants, engineers, MBAs, lawyers, teachers, architects, journalists and even doctors, making a stride in their respective knowledge domains. At a time when the KPO is in nascent stage and fluttering to grow into burgeoning proportions, anyone who is starting off on the right note will see no limits for progressing further and further.
