UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2013 – An Opportunity

For thousands of engineers passing out with BE or B Tech degrees from engineering colleges in India, there are high hopes for getting settled in government jobs in responsible posts in the government hierarchy. This dream is possible to be fulfilled, if the candidates are able to give their best and appear in the Engineering Services Examination. ESE or better known as IES ESE or Indian Engineering Services Engineering Services Examination is conducted by Union Public Service Commission or UPSC of India.

UPSC is a board constituted by a preamble of the Constitution of India, under Article 320 and 321, which is responsible for recruitment of Group A and Group B posts in various departments and ministries in the government of India. These recruitments are done by competitive written exams and/or interviews. The IES exams conducted by the UPSC are therefore having a high status because these are civil services jobs in various technical and managerial capacities.

  • For recruiting engineering graduates into the bureaucracy in India in Indian Engineering Services, the UPSC conducts a four stage competitive examination called Engineering Services Examination.
  • The selection procedure is tough, not only because of the high quality of questions which tests deep knowledge of engineering graduate candidates, but also because there are a lot of people appearing in the exam. The success ratio is as low as 0.00275, as per the IES 2012 examination.

Candidates, who will be able to clear the Engineering Services Examination 2013, will initially get posted as Assistant Executive Engineer or Assistant Works Manager or Assistant Director. Gradually, there is promotion into higher posts with greater managerial and administrative responsibilities, which is usually time bound, although the promotions also depend on the vacancies available. At the end of a 30 to 35 years service, these recruits will reach up to the position of Chairman or Director General, which is almost an equivalent post with Secretary to Government of India.

Candidates who are able to clear the Engineering Services Examination 2013 will be recruited into Group A services in 4 different categories of IES.

  • Civil Engineering in Railways, Defence, Ordnance, Water, Roads, etc
  • Mechanical Engineering in Railway, Power, Water, Ordnance, Roads, Defence and Indian Navy
  • Electrical Engineering in Railways, Naval Armament, Power, Defence, Supply and Indian army
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering in Indian Navy, Railways, Naval Armament, Ordnance, Wireless, Telecommunication and Telecom

Indian Engineering Services let candidates to work in various government departments and organisations at quite senior positions, which are Group A services, these posts being secretary positions in the Government of India.

To be fit for considered into these positions, apart from fulfilling the eligibility criteria, candidates need to appear in the written part of Engineering Services Examination 2013, which would be tentatively conducted in the month of June/July.

The written papers consists of both objective type and descriptive questions, with five parts, Written Tests are of 1000 marks total consisting of 5 papers of 200 marks each. First paper is General Ability Paper consisting of objective type questions from General English and General Studies which includes knowledge of current events, Indian History and Geography. Rest 4 papers are specific to the relevant engineering discipline. Of these first two papers will be objective type and the rest two papers will be subjective type.

A final interview round would be conducted for the candidates who pass through the written rounds. The examination pattern is such that it will test the knowledge in the theoretical and practical aspects of the jobs and responsibilities, which the candidates would be handling when they get into the jobs.

Once the stages are cleared, the successful candidates will get to train in the respective academies and institutes to get acquainted with the nature of work which they would be doing in their careers.

Date of Commencement of Exam – June 28, 2013
