Among the large number of examinations in the national level, held every year by UPSC, one is the I.E.S./I.S.S examination for recruitment of eligible candidates into the Indian Economic Services and Indian Statistical Services, in the Grade IV category, in different departments. Candidates fulfilling the eligibility criteria in terms of age and educational qualifications can only apply for these posts, for which they will have to go through the written round first, after the clearance of which, there is the interview round and medical test. Then onwards, the recruits are posted in various high ranking posts in various departments of the government and ministries.
Conduct of exam by UPSC
UPSC or Union Public Service Commission is the highest body in the country, for conducting officer rank recruitment in India, to various central government departments and ministries. It has been brought into force by Article 320 and 321 of Constitution of India and is therefore responsible for advertising for written and interview round of various examinations. Candidates, who are selected by the different steps of recruitment, are then recommended to the respective departments for posting.
- The I.E.S./I.S.S examination 2013 is also going to be conducted by UPSC, for which the advertisement has already been published from the month of September, 2012. The tentative date of written exam has been set at 1st December, 2012.
Fulfilling criteria
Since the exam of I.E.S./I.S.S is for high level officer positions, the educational criteria are also quite tough. Only those candidates who have post graduate degree in economics, or applied economics, or business economics or econometrics can apply for IES posts while those going for the ISS need to have post graduate degree in statistics or applied statistics or mathematical statistics from recognised universities.
This means that only candidates with high degrees can appear in these tests, which is a mode of increasing the standard of competition and very suitably organised by the top recruiting organisation in the country, which is the UPSC.
There are other factors of age, nationality, religion, caste, etc apart from fee payments which the candidates need to check.
Scheme of examination
A perspective which many candidates need to stress upon is that of the question structure and the topics of written examination. Knowledge of this aspect in the I.E.S./I.S.S examination 2013 by UPSC, will helps candidates in preparing for the upcoming exam in detail. In fact, those who are smart enough will start preparing for the written part as well as the interview round from very early period possible.
- In the written exam, for economic services, there are questions on general English, general studies, and four papers on general economics, each carrying 200 marks with the first two having 100 marks each.
- For statistical services, there are papers of general English and general studies, each with 100 marks while the four papers on statistics have 200 marks each.
- Interview or personality round will have 200 marks and the final merit list is weighted by these scores in total.
With the success in the I.E.S./I.S.S examination 2013, candidates will enter into a world full of opportunities and higher status. These are respected and coveted jobs in the country, mostly because of the elite nature, which is the reason for many candidates appearing in these exams, to be having a dream of reaching this stage one day.
