It is really surprising and amazing that Indian Railways is the largest civil employer in India with about 1.56 million people on the rolls.
About 20,000 employees are taken up by the department from various streams in a year. Since the management of the technical department requires people who have the knowhow, engineering jobs are highly demanded and these are the people who are managing the entire railway network. Two important bodies in the country are involved in the recruitment process with railway department divided into few subdivisions for proper rendering of management services. Railway Recruitment Boards and the UPSC are required to plan out their process to the finest details.
In total, the entire railway network is divided into some zones which are headed by the General Managers. The divisions have the DRM, with each division further divided into subdivisions which have additional railway managers.
But the recruitment process to the officer cadre is done in four separate divisions.
The highest level officers are in the group A with the responsibility of the process in the hands of the UPSC which conducts the written round of recruitment. After selection, the candidates are required to appear in the interview. Along with the other officers in the civil services, the officers in the following services are selected in the railway jobs such as Indian Railway Traffic Service, Indian Railway Accounts Service, etc. The Combined Engineering Service Examination is used to select the candidates for the Indian Railway Service for engineers, Indian Railway service for electrical and mechanical engineers and Indian railway services stores.
The group B officers are not selected and are only offered with promotions from the group C officers.
Railway Recruitment Boards which are located in 19 cities in the country are responsible for selecting the officers of the group C which involves both technical and non technical cadre. Technical officers are various engineers in different streams such as telecommunication and signals, electrical, mechanical, etc. Non technical people are assistant station masters, stenographers, ticket collectors, junior engineers, etc. These recruits are referred to the zonal offices so that the zone is the jurisdiction of carrying out such process finally.
The group D recruits are taken up by the divisions. Apart from the officer positions, there are jobs such as loco pilot, small scale sections, etc. which are filled up by recruitment at the local stations. .
