17-April-2017: Supreme Court Summons Home Secretaries of 6 States as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Karnataka, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu over Police Vacancies
The Supreme Court direct the home secretaries of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu States to assist this court personally or nominate an officer, not below the rank of joint secretary, and provide a definite roadmap for filling up of vacancies on Friday (21-April-2017).
The bench said that the data, mostly pertaining to 2013, indicates that there are a large number of vacancies in police force in these six states. The Supreme Court found that Uttar Pradesh has 1.51 lakh Police vacancies, West Bengal with 37,325 Police vacancies, Karnataka has 24,899 Police vacancies, Jharkhand has 26,303 Police vacancies, Bihar with 34,500 Police vacancies, and Tamil Nadu has 19,803 Police Post Vacant.
A bench of Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and justices D.Y. Chandrachud, and S.K. Kaul have also asked Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal to explain how they plan to fill up the vacancies. “We endeavour to monitor the filling up of vacancies,” the bench said.
