Nhava Sheva officially called Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) came into existence in 1989. JNP is the biggest container handling port in India. It welcomes 60 % of the country’s cargo. The port is equipped with world class infrastructure coupled with state of the art technology which makes it 24th best port among the top 100 Container ports in the world. The port is located in Maharashtra facing the Arabian Sea on the western coast of India. JNP is adjacent to Mumbai Port and offers shipping services far and wide. Set up with the aim to ease the burden on Mumbai Port, it has three container terminals. JNPT container terminal has three berths. The Nhava Sheva International Courier Terminal (NSICT) has two berths. Gateway Terminals India (GTI) is the third one. JNP mainly handles exports such as textiles, sporting goods, carpets, textile machinery, boneless meat and pharmaceuticals. Main imports include chemicals, machinery, plastics, electrical machinery, vegetable oils, aluminium and other non ferrous metals. The port handles imports and exports for states such as Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and North India.
JNP spans over 2500 acres provides marine and shipping services.

JNP is the only port to be awarded all four accreditations viz. ISO 9001: 2008, ISO 27001: 2005, ISO 14001: 2004, and OHSAS 18001: 2007. PORT is also ISPS compliant. JNPT has plans to construct fourth terminal.
