Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education was established on the vision for making every child realize their full potential and a commitment to carry out the work with sincerity, integrity, courtesy, efficiently and understandingly.

When it came into existence?

Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education was brought into existence on August 28, 1975 according to the Jammu and Kashmir Education act of 1975 with its headquarters at Srinagar.

There are more than 10,609 schools affiliated with the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education.

Who manages it?

Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education is headed by the Chairman appointed by the State Government, with 22,300 teachers employed in all schools affiliated to it.

How it imparts education to its students?

Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education conducts various exams as follows:-

  • Higher Secondary – Part II Bi-Annual (Pvt)
  • Matric Bi-Annual – Srinagar
  • Jammu – Annual Private Class X
  • Higher Secondary – Pt II Annual (Pvt) – Jammu Prov.
  • Jammu – Annual Regular Class X
  • Higher Secondary Pt II Annual (Reg.) Jammu Prov.
  • Higher Secondary Pt II Annual (Pvt.) Kashmir Prov.
  • Srinagar – Annual Private Class X
  • Higher Secondary Part Two – Kashmir – Annual

Moreover the board has introduced English as a compulsory language subject from Class 1 in all government and non-government schools of the state to prepare the young minds to face all sorts of challenges in the future.

Is Sarva shiksha abhiyaan its part?

Jammu and Kashmir board of school education incorporates Sarva Shiskha Abhiyaan and imparts free and compulsory education to the children for the age-group between 6 to 14 years. According to this program new schools are being opened in those areas and provisions which do not have a schooling facility earlier and helps in strengthening the infrastructure of earlier existing schools. Due to this program 443,888 children are provided with free text books, 34,963 teachers were provided with in-service teacher training and the number of children out of school was reduced from 0.52 lacs to 0.39 lacs. Apart from the free education, serious efforts are being taken to impart education to the girl child and to increase their participation and retention in the school.

What are the other benefits and objectives of Jammu and Kashmir State board of school education?

To increase the enrollment, attendance and retention of children, mid-day meal scheme has been adopted by the Jammu and Kashmir State board of school education. It does not only help in retention of students but also solves the problem of low concentration in studies due to hunger. Under this scheme during 2006-2007, 5.12 lakh children were covered.

The board has also introduced Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) to its schemes to help students in secondary education to improve, expand and get accessible to education.  It is the newest scheme launched by the Government of India and works to provide students with a secondary education school in a reasonable distance to them.

Achievements and future perspectives of Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education:

Since the independence, the state of Jammu and Kashmir is facing many triumphs. Still they made it possible to achieve a literacy rate of 55.5% as of now. In coming years through the introduction of more schools and new schemes it is believed that they will achieve a great increase in the literacy status of the state. They are in progress to adopt the Saakshar Bharat scheme completely which is a centrally sponsored scheme and believes in education of adults who have lost the opportunity of formal education and have also crossed the age for receiving education. Recently the board has also incorporated the Saksharta Mission to promote e-learning among students.
