Shipping sector is the lifeline for the people of Andaman & NIcobar islanders and it has made discernible progress in providing mobility to men and material between Mainland-Island on one side and Inter Island on the othersides. The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) is responsible for manning, maintaining and operation of the vessels owned by the Union Territory Administration. The Department is presently providing Shipping Services to 29 of the 36 inhabited Island.
The Shipping is the main mode of transportation for passenger and cargo between Mainland-Island and the only mode between the Islands. The department has been able to achieve regular service in almost all the sectors. The DSS presently operates 71 vessels in four sectors.
With the recent notification from the DSS, there is requirement of various experienced and trained manpower for operating the Shipping services by the directorate.
The details of the criteria and other requirements are detailed as follows:

Age:
- The applicants must not have crossed 33 years and should be above 18 years of age as on the last date for submission of application.
- However, there will be relaxation in upper age limit for reserved category of candidates as per rules.
Education:
- Mazdoor: The applicant must have completed Secondary Education (10th Standard) and should be with good physique.
- Tinsmith: The applicant should have completed Secondary Education (10th Standard) and ITI in Tinsmith trade. He should have at least 2 years of practical experience in the concerned trade.
- Coppersmith: The applicant should have completed Secondary Education (10th Standard) and ITI in Coppersmith trade. He should have at least 2 years of practical experience in the concerned trade.
- Machine Turner: The applicant should have completed Secondary Education (10th Standard) and ITI in Latheman trade. He should have at least 5 years of practical experience in the concerned trade.
- Asst. Store Keeper: The applicant should have completed Secondary Education (10th Standard) and should have basic knowledge of computer operation.
- Diver: The applicant should have completed Secondary Education (10th Standard) and knowledge of diving. He should be able to swim for 3 minutes and float for 7 minutes at least. Swimming Test will be applicable for this post.
- Table Boy: The applicant should have completed Secondary Education (10th Standard) and should be able to speak Hindi.
- Cleaner: The applicant should have completed Secondary Education (10th Standard) and should be able to speak Hindi.
- Light Vehicle Driver: The applicant should have completed Secondary Education (10th Standard) and should have a valid Light Vehicle Driving License. He should have knowledge of driving, minor maintenance of Machines and should have good knowledge of traffic rules.
Selection Procedure:
- The selection of candidates will be done through a procedure Written Examination Swimming Test/ Trade Test and Personal Interview.
- There will be Physical Efficiency Tests as per rules.
- The decision of the DSS will be final and binding on the candidates.

- The aspirants should take care to fill in all details as indicated by the Application Form, failure of which may subject to rejection of candidature
- After completion of application, the candidates need to paste their recent Passport size photograph and put their signature on the Application Proforma
- The candidates should attach one additional photograph (name written on the reverse side of the photo) and 2 numbers of self-addressed envelopes (12X25 inches) with Rs.10 postal stamp on each.
- The envelope containing application must be super-scribed as the “APPLICATION FOR THE POST ON ………………….”
