Infrastructure

  • The infrastructure of higher education in Italy mostly comprises of universities. The state universities are under the direct control of the government and have autonomy in their teaching, management, finances and scientific research activities. The legal jurisdiction is under own control. They primary role is to improvise the scientific research and higher education system.
  • In a university, the regulatory authority is made up of the Rector, academic senate and the board of directors, with the rector acting as the chairperson. General level guidelines of the universities are laid down by the academic senate which also looks after the development of the universities. Board of directors are responsible for the administrative, financial and personnel management and also approves the budget.
  • The faculties of the individual departments plan out their own subject areas, with planning being done for the different degree programs.
  • Research programs in various departments are organised by the individual faculties, which promote and manage research, organise doctoral programs, and carry out consultancy works.

In general, international students can take admissions into the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles in higher education. Depending on the course in which the admission is to be taken, the important requirement is that the qualifying education requirement is to be fulfilled and along with that, the students should have competency in Italian language.

For admission into undergraduate level, the students should have passed the higher secondary school exam in their own country. They should have become eligible for entry into higher education in their own country. A valid school leaving certificate is also required.

For admission into masters degree and doctoral courses, the students should have passed the undergraduate and masters degree in their own countries.

Application procedures for admission into higher education universities in Italy are different for the students from EU and non-EU countries.

  • There are certain pre-enrolment procedures that are required to be followed by the non-EU cities, and it also depends on the type of scholarship that one has acquired. The application for the specific cycle has to be selected and filled up form along with the necessary documents are to be sent to the competent Italian Diplomatic authority, before the deadline which has been fixed by the university, which is usually before the start of a semester.
  • The documents required to be submitting along with the filled in application form are usually last educational institution leaving certificate or the degree certificate, and two passport sized photo of which one is certified.
  • In case of higher education, the detailed mark sheet and the different subjects in which the last exam has been appeared is to be supplied with the application form.
  • Other necessities regarding the sending of the application to the Italian diplomatic authority can be known by getting in touch with the specific university which has accepted your studentship.

Visa requirement

Once the students arrive in Italy, they will have to report at the concerned Questura or the police station within 8 days of arrival.

Residence permit is also required by the non-EU students, if they plan to study in Italy for more than 3 months period. Students who are from countries with Schengen declaration, are required to have a Schengen visa so that they can move in other areas of Europe but then also the residence permit is needed if they wish to stay for more than 3 months.

  • The application form for the residence permit is known as the Yellow Kit, which can be collected from any post office and the filled in form along with other documents need to be submitted to the post office also. The documents required to be submitted along with the residence permit application form are:
    • Letter of acceptance from the university or any such document
    • Passport photocopy which mentions about the candidate
    • Copy of the health insurance plan
    • Documents related to the accommodation facilities in Italy that has been arranged by the student
    • Bank documentation showing financial ability to support the stay in the country for the period of stay of at least 325 euros per month
    • Residence permit is to be applied in a post office within 8 days of entry into the country, at the same time when the local Questura is to be informed. The permit will be issued through the same post office after being notified by the police to collect the permit.
    • The fees for applying the residence permit is 27,50 euros along with the 14,62 euros for stamps and 30 euros more for processing of the application.

Cost of study and living in Italy

For university education, the fee is usually set by the respective institutions, but there is a minimum legal fee for enrolment and higher maximum student contribution to cost and services, which is usually fixed below 20% of the funding by the state.

  • On an average the student fee is between 850 to 1000 Euros per year, although it may change from university to university and from course to course.
  • Private universities and post doctoral and other higher degrees have more fees, which can vary according to the grants that people are receiving.
  • Cost of living in Italy is dependent on the place in which students are studying because the tourist areas have a relatively higher cost of living. On an average, the students need about 1000 to 1500 Euros every month to live comfortably in Italy.

Scholarships

  • About scholarships that can be availed, all the students coming into the universities of Italy are entitled to these benefits, as are the Italian students. Apart from scholarships, there are also facilities of fee waiver, grants, student loans, housing assistance and so on.
