Infrastructure
- The education system in Bangladesh is divided into 3 stages of primary, secondary and tertiary. Tertiary education comprises of the higher education institutions consisting of universities of public and private sector and some specialised courses such as agriculture, engineering and medical.
- There are presently about 11 public universities and 20 private universities in Bangladesh. Another typical system of education is the Madarsa system, although this caters to the school education. Some foreign universities have also opened their campuses in the country so as to provide higher education to people of the country as well as benefit the neighbouring countries as well.
Application procedures
Universities for higher education in Bangladesh require the students to take up entrance tests for admitting them in the respective courses. If the students are interested for a course in the university level, then they have to get in touch with the particular university and enquire about the date of entrance.
- Before doing so, the students need to submit their application form and other documents about their nationality, proof of age, previous educational qualification transcripts, passport, photographs and other documents as directed by the university office or the online websites.
- These entrance exams are required to be appeared in Bangladesh for which the students need to enter into the country for a short period and then go back to wait for the results. When the results are declared, the intimation will reach the students, after which they will have to apply for the visa.
- The minimum eligibility for the higher education has to be completed. Bachelor degrees can be pursued only if the students are able to produce transcripts of their previous higher secondary school certificate. Similarly for admissions into the master’s and doctoral courses will require the certificates of the previous educational qualifications.
Visa requirements
Visas for Bangladesh can be acquired by submitting the necessary documents at the embassy in one’s country. The documents required are:
- Passport with a minimum validity of 6 months
- Student visa application form
- Letter of acceptance from the respective Bangladesh university
- Return air tickets
- Letter from employer if job is also to be done
- Medical examination report
- Passport sized photo 1 number
With these documents, it becomes easier for the embassy to process the visa for the students.
Cost of study and living in Bangladesh
Being a developing country in Asia, Bangladesh is quite cheaper for the students. And since education in universities is highly subsidised, the cost of studying in the government institutions is almost negligible. The private universities can be a bit costly.
- Private university studies can range from 50,000 Bangladesh Taka to 100,000 BT for a year.
- Accommodations in Bangladesh can be arranged in different ways which can range from as low as 7,000 BT to 30,000 BT if the students opt for renting their own houses. There are also government run hostels, in which the students can stay in nominal amounts.
- Cost of living with other expenses is low and can go up to 4000 to 7000 BT for a month, which will include transportation, gym, food and other smaller expenses.
Scholarships
- Since the government is highly encouraging for the higher education, it also provides for scholarships for meritorious students who are not able to afford these courses. These scholarships can be extended to the foreign nationals also.
- Some other scholarships are available, which are provided by the private world bodies like World Bank, trusts and foundations, who want the students from third world countries to access higher education.
