Ordnance Factories Board (OFB)

The Indian Ordnance Factories are a group of 41 factories governed by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.  The factories come under the aegis of Ordnance Factory Board, Kolkata and are involved in production of defence hardware and equipment. These factories are aimed at providing reliable and state-of-the art battlefield equipments to the armed forces. With an experience of over 200 years, the factories have made their presence felt not only in India but abroad. Export quality products of the company speak volumes of high level production facilities that the company has.

Equipped with latest technology and trained personnel, the company wants to expand its customer base in non- defence equipments as well.  Wide range of equipments and products include air, land and water warfare. Besides production, the company is engaged in testing, logistics, research, development and marketing. Products manufactured by the company range from civilian arms & ammunition, armoured vehicles, military vehicles, optical devices, explosives, etc. At present, the company has a workforce of about 1, 50,000.

Ordnance Factory Board (OFBHQ) is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal. Two more corporate headquarters are located at:

  • Ordnance Factory Board, New Delhi Office
  • Ordnance Factory Board, Mumbai

There are two more branch headquarters as well at Avadi, Chennai and Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The giant industrial set up works under the administrative control of Department of Defence Production under Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Ordnance Factories group comprises of forty one factories (10 in Maharashtra, 8 in Uttar Pradesh, 6 in Madhya Pradesh, 6 in Tamil Nadu, 4 in West Bengal, 2 in Uttaranchal, 1 in Andhra Pradesh, 1 in Chandigarh, and 1 in Orissa), nine training institutes, three Regional Marketing Centers and four Regional Controllers of Safety. The factories are involved in production of defence equipment and hardware for the Armed Forces of the nation. Factories are categorized into 5 operating groups/ divisions depending upon the production/ technologies employed. These are:

  • Arms and Ammunitions
  • Weapons, Vehicles and Equipments
  • Materials and Components
  • Armored Vehicles
  • Ordnance Equipment Group of Factories

Indian Ordnance Factories Organization is the largest and oldest organization run by the Indian Government.

Eighteen factories were set up before Independence. Twenty three factories were established after independence.

The factories are primarily engaged in producing Arms, ammunitions, Explosives, Military Vehicles, Clothing items, etc for the Armed Forces. Ordnance Factories are also called “Fourth Arm of Defence” and “Force behind the Armed Forces” of India. OFB has played a vital role in redefining the duties and function of the organization. It has worked as a lighthouse towards development of new technologies and modernizations of the factories to keep pace with the changing times.

Ordnance Factories Recruitment Board (OFRB)

Main role of Ordnance Factories Recruitment Board (OFRB) is to fill up vacancies manpower commissioned by Ordnance Factories Board (OFB).

The Board is headquartered in Ambajhari, Nagpur. With the formation of the board, recruitment system has become centralized and there is uniformity in selection methods of the factories. Besides to bring about uniformity in selection criteria like syllabus, educational qualification, service and experience OFRB is set up. It will have a separate website with an Online Application module for Online Registration, Exam Centre Selection and unit allocation as per the exams results. The website will be in Hindi/ English and facilitate online registration, payment gateway, admit card generation, results, etc.

Indian Ordnance Factory Recruitment

The company is in need of fresh workers to replenish aging personnel in the manufacturing unit. Going by the statistics, the Ordnance Factory Board has sanctioned 12,500 posts of semi-skilled personnel this year. Extreme shortage of workers has led to ample vacancies in the multi-disciplinary company. Majority of vacancies are filled through direct recruitment (60%) while 40% recruitment is done through promotions.

It is one of the civil services in India. The cadre size is 1760 posts inclusive of Group A, B, and C posts. The cadre is composed of Engineers (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics), Technologists (Chemical, Textile, Leather, Metallurgical) and non technical (Science, Law, Management, Arts).

The recruitment in ‘Group A’ officer cadre is done by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Engineering posts are filled through the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) while non technical streams are filled through Civil Services Examination (CSE). Recruited IOFS officers are trained at National Academy of Defence Production, Nagpur. Knowledge on topics like engineering, management, production, government rules, human relations, etc are imparted as part of the induction programme.

Relaxations in upper age limit and adequate reservation is given to candidates belonging to reserved category.

There are also ITI and Non-ITI apprentice positions available under Indian Ordnance Factory recruitment. The minimum qualification for non ITI posts is 10th pass while ITI candidates should have passed relevant trade tests.

Group C posts include Electrician, Fitter Electronics, Fitter General, Machinist, Millwright, Moulder and Turner. Basis of selection is written test and medical exam.

OFB has commissioned 12,500 recruitments this year. The Ordnance Factories are facing extreme shortage of workers in the workshops. Out of 12500 only 5000 recruits will be joining. OFRB carries out advertisements for the posts of ITI and Non ITI Apprentice positions and also for Joints Work Manager & Charge Man. All the Direct Recruitment sanctioned by the OFB will be carried out through OFRB. Advertisement regarding the same will be carried out in all national dailies (Rozgar Samachar/ Employment News, etc) and official site www.ofbindia.gov.in.

The employees of the Ordnance Factories are classified as:

(i)                  “Officers” of Senior Supervisory level (Gazetted Officers)

(ii)                “Non Gazetted Officers (NGO)” or Non Industrial Employees (NIEs) working at Junior Supervisory Level and clerical establishment and

(iii)               Industrial Employees (IEs) who are involved in the production and maintenance operations.

Gazetted officers of Indian Ordnance Factories Services Group A include: Engineers (Mechanical/ Civil/ Electrical/ Electronics), Chemical Engineers, Metallurgical Engineers, Leather Technologists, Clothing Technologists and Administrative Officers. Recruitment to the above cadre is made either by competitive examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) or by promotion or deputation/ absorption from other service.

Each factory is headed by a General Manager. Other officers of the Group A rank are Additional General Manager, Joint General Manager, Works Manger and Assistant Works Manager. Below them is Group B Officers and Group C staff. Workers directly engaged in production activities in the workshops are called Direct Workers. Employees engaged in support activities like maintenance of building, boiler, plant & machineries, quality assurance, etc are called Indirect Workers.

Ordnance Factories are considered Fourth Arm of the Defence Forces of the country, hence there is need to replenish workers as soon as vacancies arise so that the production does not suffer. OFRB releases advertisements and notifications for the vacancies in different factories/ units and sets cut off dates to recruit personnel.
