UPSC Combined Medical Services (CMS) Examination 2013 – An Opportunity

When students get into medical colleges, their joys and their parents’ dreams have no bounds. It appears to reach the limit of the sky, satisfied that their wards will have successful careers in the coming years, after finishing their education. Giving colours to such dreams and wings to ambitions is the combined medical services, which comprises of posts in the railways, ordnance factories and posts of doctors in Central Health Services and in Delhi Municipal Corporation.

  • Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) would conduct the Combined Medical Services Examination 2013, which is a body constituted under the Constitution of India, according to Article 320 and 321. It is the responsibility of the UPSC to recruit candidates in the central government departments and therefore the medical services cadres are filled by written and interview rounds.
  • Since UPSC is responsible for selecting candidates into the Group A and Group B posts in the different departments, the recruits through the Combined Medical Services Examination 2013 will be able to secure high posts in the medical services, with central government pay scales and important status.

Candidates, who are serious about joining central government after passing their MBBS degrees, can apply for the Combined Medical Services Examination 2013, which is tentatively advertised in the month of March and examination would be conducted in June/July. Although eligibility criteria knowledge will be important for submitting the applications, the information on the pattern of examination can let people ride the waves of success. Understanding the pattern or scheme of examination will help them go for this test with greater confidence.

  • The examination is conducted over two sittings in a single day, comprising of objective type questions with 200 marks in each paper, to be held for 2 hours. There are different subjects from which the questions are distributed with differences in mark distribution.

Exam Schedule:

  • In Paper I, subjects like General Medicine, Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology and Psychiatry will have 60 percent, while Surgery where ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, and Traumatology will have 40 percent weightage.
  • Paper II has Paediatrics with 20 percent weightage, while 40 percent weightage is given to each of Gynaecology and Community Medicine.
  • Candidates who have qualified in the written round will have to appear for the interview or personality test, which again would be conducted by UPSC and they would be marked from 100 marks.

Prospects for Candidates following Combined Medical Service Examination:

By virtue of qualifying in the written and interview rounds, candidates will be selected for posting in different central government departments and hospitals. Various postings given are:

  • Assistant Divisional Medical Officers in Railways
  • Junior Scale posts in Indian Ordnance Factories Health Services
  • Junior Scale posts in Central Health Services
  • Medical Officers in Municipal Corporation of Delhi
  • General Duty Medical Officers in NDMC

After passing out of the medical colleges with MBBS degrees, those doctors who wish to join the central government services and start a prosperous and challenging career in treating patients will have the opportunity of Combined Medical Services Examination 2013 as a golden chance. Since the hospitals in which they would be posted are under central government organisations, there would be sufficient scope for them to diagnose and treat patients and perform advanced surgeries.
