The student visa that would be required to study in Spain allows people to pursue a course in a university and follow research work, if people intend to study for more than 3 months. All students from non-EU nations have to arrange for such student visa, but only after they receive their acceptance letter from the universities.

The application for the visa has to be submitted at the Spanish consulate of one’s country in person or through authorized representative, but this is accepted on first come first serve basis. Visa application for spouse and children below 18 years can also be submitted along with the candidate’s application, if they are to accompany also.

Students intending to go to Spain for studies need to put in their applications only within 4 months of their visiting Spain and not before that. Visa processing time is usually 7 weeks. Since the visa is issued for 6 months, students should apply for the further stay within one month of their arrival. This application should be accompanies by an authorisation of completion of studies and a student ID card issued by the Spanish police.

Documents that are required in order to obtain the student visa are:

  • Passport which is valid for the period of stay with one blank page to affix the visa along with the photo identity card
  • Passport size photo 2 in number
  • Letter of acceptance by the university in which the course is to be pursued with mention of name, address, registration number of the school, full payment of tuition fee, duration of program and the subjects of study along with hours of study per week.
  • Health insurance with a minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros and a health certificate from competent authorities in one’s country

Students should have to provide proofs of their finances to be required during their period of stay, in any of the following forms:

  • Letter from the institution in which study is to be done which will take the responsibility of all financial terms during the period of stay
  • Proof of financial aid or scholarship to the minimum extent of 1000 dollar per month including accommodation
  • Letter from parents or guardians authorised by the notary that they will be taking full monetary responsibility of a minimum of 1000 dollar
  • Bank accounts which will show a balance that will sustain 1000 dollar expenditure per month
  • A certificate of Absence of Police Records from the police department of the city where one has stayed for more than 6 months in the past five years
  • A medical certificate with the doctor’s statement that the student is free of contagious diseases and is medically fit to travel and study abroad

After the processing of the visa is over, there will be stamping of the passport with the visa with the mention of the duration and date for which the visa is applied inclusive of the duration of study.

Admission requirements

For the purpose of admissions into undergraduate and post graduate studies, there are different eligibilities and application procedures, as set by the individual universities. These should be known by the foreign students from the websites of the respective universities or the embassy. But the basic guidelines are the same.

  • Undergraduate study applicants should have completed their higher secondary education and should posses a valid school leaving certificate. They should have also qualified for higher education in their own country. English proficiency test in the form of IELTS or TOEFL should have been appeared.
  • For the master’s degree courses, bachelor degrees are a must while for the Ph.D programs, the pass in diploma or master’s degree is a must.
  • After the preregistration procedures are over, people will have to appear for 5 tutorials with the course coordinator. Students will have to enrol in person with the Administration Academic office of the concerned faculty.
  • The original certificates are to be produced at this time along with the receipt of fee paid.
  • Spanish language tests are required to be taken by the students as per the prerequisites by some universities, which also depend on the course to be pursued.

Education system in public universities dictates that the applications for admissions should be submitted before the 1st of July. Hence the application procedure and visa applications should be submitted much before this date.

Cost of study and living in Spain

Spain is one of the upcoming countries for the foreign students who want to pursue higher education. The cost of study in the country is reasonable, attracting many students who want to stay in the exotic country and pursue a course of their interest. It is lower than what people might spend if they choose some other European university.

  • For the undergraduate courses the yearly fee is usually increasing with increments every year, but on average is about 1000 Euros per year. The post graduate, doctoral and PhD courses are more towards an average of 5000 Euros per year.
  • The cost of living in Spain is somewhat lower than other European countries, which can go to an average of about 3000 Euros per year, which will include accommodations, living expenses, travelling and food.


Various institutions and organisations offer foreign students some scholarships and financial assistance for their studies in different subjects. By going through online portals and through various scholarship sites, information can be availed.

  • Foreign Language Assistants in Spain is offered to students who have bachelor degree in arts, science or even masters degree in these streams.
  • Individual universities in which the applicants are to study also provide some scholarships.
