Perched in a strategic geographical location in the South East Asian region, Malaysia has recently become a favourite destination for the international students to put in their applications for studying in the Malaysian universities. Admission requirements

Subjects like management, engineering, science, and other subjects in graduate, post graduate and PhD courses can be pursued in Malaysia if the students have acquired 60% in their previous courses in their host countries. Passing in qualifying exams like SAT, TOEFL, IELTS, etc is not a prerequisite.

Visa requirements

Malaysian government has made it easier for the students of international communities to acquire their visa or student pass in order to study in the universities in Malaysia.

  • Students will have to send their student pass application form to the university where they have been approved to pursue their higher education. The university will require the passport copy of the students and passport size photographs, student’s medical health examination report, evidence of student’s ability to finance the study in Malaysia, and these can be sent to the Malaysian Immigration Department for being issued with the student pass.
  • A personal bond rate of a specified amount that varies for students from one country to another is to be furnished by the institution guaranteeing that the student will comply with the rules and regulations of the country.
  • Once the approval letter is issued by the immigration department, the college will send the same to the student, which is to be carried by the student to the entry point in Malaysia, which is usually the Kuala Lumpur international airport.
  • Here the student is received by the institution and the approval letter and passport is stamped at the immigration check point in the airport along with the issuance of the visa, which is valid for a period of 6 months.
  • A special pass is also issued at the immigration counter which will be required to procure the student pass within 14 days of this pass, which will be then submitted by the respective institution to the immigration counter for the sticker of student pass to be affixed. This usually takes about 2 weeks time.
  • The sticker will have the mention of the type of visa, duration of stay and other information regarding the student’s stay in the country.
  • Relatives of the students can get a long term social pass for staying for the duration of course, especially for the postgraduate students.

Cost of study and living in Malaysia

One of the reasons for the rising popularity of studying in Malaysia has been the lower costs of study with very affordable cost of living. International students find this low cost as one of the biggest factors in comparison to those in the UK or USA.

  • For degree programs, the cost of study could be about 4000 to 5000 US dollars, which otherwise would have been about 15,000 to 20,000 US dollars in US or UK.

Post graduate studies in Malaysia cost around 10,000 to 15,000 USD depending on the subject which is being pursued.

  • Lower cost of living is also in impetus with costs of about 3000 to 4000 USD per year, which is very much low than what it would have been in United States of America.

Scholarships in Malaysia

Scholarships in Malaysia are provided to the international students from various sources, of which the government scholarships are in high demand and there is stiff competition to avail one. MTCP scholarships, MIS scholarships for undergraduate students, MIS scholarships for postgraduate students, and commonwealth scholarships are some of the important one.

Most of the financial assistance is received for the international students aiming to pursue postgraduate studies and these are from the sources of:

  • University fellowships on the basis of merit and covers the tuition fee and gives stipend to the students.
  • Donations from individuals or organisations are given to the universities to be provided to the students taking admissions in these institutions.
  • Assistantship is provided by some universities for the students in doctoral courses in science and engineering field.
