As students vie to get into a course in the foreign universities, there are few countries in this world, which are as alluring as is Japan. As the data suggests, there are about 1.5 million students pursuing variety of courses in countries away from their homeland. Of this large population, 138,075 students are in Japan. The figure is an indication of the high demand of Japanese universities among the foreign nationals. Located in the eastern hemisphere, this country has established itself as one of the most developed nations in the world, which has gone on from strength to strength to excel in every aspect ranging from science to arts and culture. And such a success has come to the country of Japan, because of the highest level of stress on education system.

Why study in Japan

The academic environment in Japan, which allows the students to study the state of the art technology and acquire knowledge, has been highly conducive for higher education. Whatever is the subject that the students choose, Japanese universities and other institutes of higher education can offer course studies and research programs in any field. The country also has a comparatively higher ratio of the students going on to higher education from the secondary and undergraduate levels.

All the institutes under the higher education spectrum are able to provide fine research, books and libraries, and computers to the students in order to pursue their research in their field of interest. It is only because of the high standard of education and research that scientists from Japan have been awarded the Nobel prizes. Many of the world leaders with influence in various aspects of governance and administration have had something of their education in Japan.

The present day culture of Japan is a mix of old and new ideas and principles and an amalgamation of the good things of both east and west. Even though the post world war era saw a steep increase in the economic and industrial growth, the Japanese people didn’t lose their attachment with their age old culture. The presence of rich nature, diverse topography and pleasant climates, all have aided in the growth of the country. The folk culture, local festivals, annual events, etc have kept people close to their roots. The cuisine of Japan is still known and consumed by the most developed of the countries and this goes on to suggest that Japan is a place, where the students will have a wholesome growth.

Infrastructure

The technology colleges in Japan are government institutes which have a five year course in a variety of fields. There are about 62 technical colleges in the country. Although, in the initial years the students could take admissions directly, in recent years, there is entrance exams conducted for admission into technical courses. These colleges take in students who have complete 3 years of secondary schools and the course is for 5 years, of which the initial years are for general technical education which gradually becomes increasingly specialized.

  • About 7% of the post graduate courses or masters programs are found with the universities. About half of the graduate students go on to enter these universities, most of them preferring the public universities.
  • The university level courses are usually of the 4 year duration, although medical and dentistry could take longer. After passing out from these institutions, the students are awarded the master’s degree, doctoral degree or the professional degrees.
  • The higher universities also collaborate and try to implement the world level education policies of which the programs by the UNESCO, United Nations University, Asia Pacific Program for All, etc are being actively taken up.

As per the amendment of education system in 2004, many more public universities were proposed to be established.

Admission requirements

  • Students who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree will have to complete undergraduate studies for 4 years and 6 years for medicine, dentistry and veterinary sciences.
  • 2 years of study allows the students to get the master’s degree or the number of years that a particular research work is required in a particular specialization. The thesis work is required during this period also.
  • After graduation, a total of 5 years in PhD studies can confer the doctorate degree in any subject.
  • Technical degrees require a student to pass the post secondary courses from special training colleges that have been accredited by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Application process

  • When the application form for the students is put in, information about the academic performances, grades, talents, letter of recommendations, interests and hobbies and the purpose of selecting Japan for higher studies are to the supplied. Mark sheets and other relevant transcripts should also be attached.
  • A personal statement/essay has to be written down by the student, where proper explanations and reasoning are to be provided which can also show the communication and written skills.
  • The GPA scores are also required to be mentioned, along with the extra curricular activities and other talents. This particular aspect has to be taken care of in detail, with assistance from the professors and academicians if need be.
  • The next round to be cleared is that of the personal interview round, where a selection committee will be asking questions to the candidates. The behavior, mannerism and the presentation needs to be accurate for the students, and they should also be ready to face a group discussion, if the situation so demands.

Visa requirements

Students, who wish to stay for more than 90 days in Japan, will need to get a student visa for themselves. Some countries are there which will not need the visa, but beyond 6 months, every foreign student will need a visa to prolong their stay and pursue a course that is more than 6 months.

  • Visa can be applied in the nearest immigration office of the country in which the student resides. The rules and regulations of the visa application need to be in compliance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. The students undergoing education in the universities need to apply for the college student residence status.
  • Students can apply for the visa by two ways

i)             They can apply directly to the Japanese consulate

ii)            Application can be done by a person in the university in which the student has been accepted can apply for a certificate of eligibility and along with this, the student can apply for student visa in the respective embassies.

  • There are certain documents which would be required to be submitted along with the visa application and they are proof of admission or the certificate of eligibility, passport sized photographs, passport, and a proof of financial competency.
  • Once the visa is approved and the person travels into the country, there is an examination that is mandatory in Japan. The valid passport and valid visa affixed, the Embarkation Card which is issued in the flight and the certificate of eligibility are things that are required to be shown at the immigration check counter.
  • Once the student conforms to the various criteria for staying in Japan and studying, the entry is authorized and the seal of verification is affixed on the passport or in the form of a sticker. The landing permit seal contains information such as status of residence, period of stay and date of expiration.
  • If the student aims to pursue education for more than 90 days, then he or she has to register as an alien. To do so, one has to apply at the municipal office with the passport and two photographs in order to receive the alien registration card.

Cost of study and living in Japan

Although Japan is a progressive and developed country, the cost of living is not very high. This has been one of the reasons for the greater number of students coming into the country for higher education.

  • The cost of studies in Japan has been pegged at about 535,000 yen per year, although it might vary from one university to another.
  • For the purpose of accommodations, personal expenditure, food and leisure, the students should arrange a sum of 5000 -8000 yen per month.

Scholarships

  • Scholarships are forwarded by the Japan Student Services Organization, which offers the meritorious students to avail the national level universities. This money is received by the students on a monthly basis.
  • Another scholarship which is under the government is that of the Japanese Government Scholarships Scheme.
  • Graduate Scholarships for non-Japanese women to study in Japan is provided by the College Women’s Association of Japan.
  • Graduate and undergraduate scholarships for study in Japan are offered by the Mitsubishi Trust Yamamuro Memorial Scholarship Foundation.

There are many such scholarships that are available for the students from outside Japan. Many of these are provided by prominent companies and private organization in the country and some are also funded by the public universities and government and non-profit organizations.

With the proper visa at hand, the students can go for the jobs in the multitude of private organizations who recognize the higher education degrees as competent enough for recruiting the foreign students also. it is of utmost importance that the students from outside countries try and check their visa status and also secure good scores in their qualifying examinations. This will allow them to be recruited immediately and start off in a career in some of the leading innovative firms in Japan.
