Study In Czech Republic – The Land Of History, Culture And Enriching Education

In the middle of Europe, surrounded by land from all side, Czech Republic is a landlocked country. It can be properly described as a country in the heart of Europe, which reflects all the good that is in Europe. Admission requirements

  • For the post graduate studies, the students will have to pass through the undergraduate courses or a bachelor’s degree, which is an essential requirement. The minimum grades will be variable, depending on the course selected and the university applied.
  • Admission in the bachelor’s program requires the students to complete a full secondary education program or a vocational program in the home country.
  • Commonly, the cut off date for applying to post graduate courses in universities is by the end of February, although some institutions have the deadline extended till March/April. But still, students should check the dates for individual universities to which they are applying.
  • The course structure is usually divided into two semesters, each semester having an examination at the end, followed by holiday period. The semester usually contains a teaching period of about 15 weeks, starting usually from October.
  • The two semesters are divided into winter and summer, at the end of which there is a 5 week examination period followed by a holiday of 7 days during winter semester and 2 month during summer semester.
  • The curriculum of each university is framed by the universities themselves which is the freedom provided to them. But this curriculum should be approved by the Ministry of Education with the decision being taken by the Accreditation Commission.
  • Before applying to a particular university, students should make some enquiries. For the purpose of admission, there is requirement of proofs of certificates of the qualifying examination, application form duly filled up and the application fee also which is non refundable. Even, nowadays many universities are accepting online applications. More than one university can be simultaneously applied, if people want to have choices.
  • Most of the higher education universities require the students to take an entrance examination, which is held between June and September, but the exam for arts stream is held in January for which the application is to be submitted by November in the previous year.
  • If people are choosing a course that is being taught in Czech, then they shall have to give a proof of their knowledge in this particular language.

Visa requirements

An application for the visa for a long term stay of more than 90 days can only be made in the embassy in the foreign country, for which it is usually advisable to appear personally.

  • Students who wish to stay in Czech Republic for less than 90 days are required to obtain the short stay visa, provided they do not belong to the Schengen agreement country. Non EU students will have to get the long stay visa or residence permit for longer courses.
  • Various documents are required to be submitted along with the application form and these should be in the original or official copy form. All the documents submitted should be converted into Czech language or officially translated into Czech. Papers submitted with the application form are

–       travel document or passport in original,

–       recent passport photographs two in number,

–       document on the purpose of stay,

–       proof of accommodation,

–       Proof of sufficient funds for staying in Czech Republic.

  • Some universities also ask for a medical record and also seek the document of the penal register record.
  • After the application is put down, the embassy can be contacted after two weeks or then we sail out.
  • If any discrepancy is found out in the application for the visa, then the students are called up for personal interviews so that the right steps can be taken by explaining the wrongs. The fee and the documents are also returned.
  • The nearest embassy is now in contact with the student.
  • Non EU people can become permanent residents if they apply for the same after 5 years of continuous living in Czech Republic.

Cost of study and living in Czech Republic

It has been decreed by law that there will not be any tuition fee charged by the public and state universities and it is free of cost for students of all nationalities. But the students will have to pay the fee for admission proceedings, extending the duration of study beyond the set limits, additional programs to be studied, and for studying in a foreign language. This means that courses pursued in English will be levied with a tuition fee, which should be enquired from the respective universities.

  • Private institutions can fix their own fee structure and therefore the cost of the study in Czech Republic, can be 2000 Euros to 15,000 Euros per year, according to the course and institution.

  • Scholarships for the south Moravian centre for international mobility is a funding provided to meritorious students from Non-EU countries to follow masters and PhD courses.
  • Fulbright, Czech government funds, and various other private organisations have their own funding for the students to receive their scholarships.
  • A few of the universities also provide their admitted students with the scholarships where they can get the funds based entirely on merit and excellent academic background.
