Admission requirements

  • For various subjects, students will need to fulfil the following eligibility criteria in order to gain entry in to the Brazilian universities. There is a difference in the eligibility criteria for entry into undergraduate and post graduate programs in Brazil.
  • The 3+2 Bologna system of application is prevalent at the undergraduate level, where they can apply for admissions into undergraduate courses if students have finished 1 year studies in their own country. Apart from these, there might be individual requirements of the universities in which the students have applied.
  • Masters degree courses are pursued by the students if they have finished their undergraduate courses, especially in those institutes where the 3+2 system is in force.
  • The PhD courses can be pursued by the students if they have completed the master’s degree courses, or have started their PhDs in some other host country university. Those pursuing these qualifying examinations can also apply for universities in Brazil, provided they declare their current status.
  • The post doctoral courses can be undertaken if the students have past research activities in their credits or have achieved highly specialised courses.
  • Admission procedure for higher education in Brazilian universities is started if the candidates have finished their secondary education level and have been approved in Vestibular. This is a competitive examination which determines whether a student is qualified to enter into the given institution or not. Since a decade back, when the Secondary Education Evaluation Exam was launched, this ENEM has become the standard for admission process.

Once people select their educational institutions, they should download their respective application form and it should be sent along with requisite documents to the concerned university. The English language proficiency test score should also be mentioned in here. If the suitability of the candidature through the application form is considered by the university, then a letter of acceptance will be sent to the candidate, after which the process of students visa or residence permit is to be availed.

Visa requirements

Before going into Brazil, candidates for higher education should make sure that they have a valid passport that would have a validity date for 6 months more than the duration of study. Students should have a valid student visa and not try to take admissions by having a tourist visa only.

Steps to get a student visa:

  1. Students need to get a letter of acceptance from the university in which one intends to pursue their education. It should be a formal invitation to study in the university and description of what the student would be doing.
  2. In the official page of the Brazilian consulate, the VITEM-IV form is available which needs to be downloaded.
  3. The following documents need to be submitted along with the application form either by post to the embassy or one can personally visit the embassy in one’s country.
  • Passport with one page blank for stamping purposes and the validity should be at least 6 months more than the intended study duration.
  • Two separate visa application forms are required which must be signed by the student.
  • Two passport sized photograph with the face front are also needed.
  • The letter of acceptance from the concerned university is to be applied.
  • Students should furnish a letter from the notary which states that the parents have sufficient resources to support financially during the period of education.
  • A non criminal record statement should be supplied from the police station of their place of residence.
  • People need to furnish a proof of residence at the location near the particular embassy for a period of at least one year.
  • Health insurance papers need to be presented along with a document to prove yellow fever immunisation.
  1. The visa application has to be done only within 90 days of travel date.
  2. Once the visa is received, the students should check for the RN number notation which refers to the legal category under which the visa has been issued and is required by the local police to process the candidate’s visa.
  3. Along with the passport and visa received back from the embassy, there is also the other copy of the visa application form, which was sent earlier. This application should be kept safely till one reaches Brazil so as to submit it with the local Brazilian police. On arrival in Brazil, the students will have to register themselves with the local Brazilian police within 21 days, which should be done on priority. This qualifies the students to receive a temporary ID card, which can be renewed again from the local police after expiry.
  4. The student visa will usually take about 2-3 days if presented in person at the embassy.

Cost of living and study in Brazil

Studying in Brazil in the public and private institution will cost money for the foreign students, although the public institutions do not charge any tuition fee from the local students. Some public institutions are there, which also do not charge from the foreign students. The cost of tuition fee can vary from 300 USD to 3000 USD, which also depends on the subject pursued and university. On an average, the costs are 5,500 USD every year.

Living costs in Brazil, for the foreign students can be somewhere around 3000 USD in a month, which will be inclusive of accommodation, living expenses and food.

Career and outcome

After the students have received their education, they will be ready to take up careers according to their qualifications, but to work in Brazil they will require the work permit. Otherwise, students can go into the corporations that are established in any other part of the world and build a career in academics, research or corporate jobs because the Brazilian system of education is acceptable to a lot of companies and countries.
