A resume is document that is usually sent to the recruiting company with the job application. In almost all kinds of recruitment process, this particular document accompanies the application or it is asked by many recruiters to send the CV first, before any further considerations are brought into the process. There are a few companies which have their own application form, in which they ask to attach the resume or copy and paste them as it is.
In a sense, a resume is a first step for initiating any job dealing for the company as well as the applicant. If the importance of this particular document is so much, then it is obvious that the resume writing should be given due consideration. It has been seen by many recruiters as well as resume writing experts that deserving candidates miss out on the jobs because they fail to bring their resumes to sight. Also, the companies lament the lack of proper writing procedure because by this ignorance or laziness on part of the candidates, they are not able to get the right man for the right job. As a result, proper resume writing is being seen as paramount importance in present day employment sector. And for this, some aspects have to be covered by the candidates.
Writing Resumes – The presentation of the document should be very lucid and follow a set pattern. One cannot take the liberty of writing anything and in any format. Heading should include education qualifications, previous job experiences if any, practical skills acquired, past positions, etc should be presented in a readable manner and cryptic. No recruiter would give the time to read through long sentences and points which are written in an essay. Strong points are to be highlighted and those not concerning the applied posts should be best left out.
Misconception – A common idea that is seen with many people, but is usually wrong, is that people tend to write their personal details like marital status, hobbies, etc, which do not have any bearing on the job applied. These should be left out of the writing, unless they have been directly asked for.
Accompanying Cover Letter – Since in most cases, the cover letter is accompanied by the resumes, people should clearly corroborate the two documents. Cover letter is meant to introduce the resume while resume is a document which backs up the cover letter with details highlighted in detail, limiting it to the most relevant information.
Purpose – The purpose of resume writing is to make the recruiter take notice of the candidature of the applicant. It is meant to impress upon the recruiter to take the recruitment process to the next step and call for interview. There should be clear mention of the future aspirations of the candidates and how it coincides with the organisation’s future plans and whether or not the candidate would be a value addition to the company.
Content – The contents of the resume should be very professional, depicting the qualities and qualifications that would be of benefit to the company. There should be mentions of the education, professional skills learnt, seminars and workshops attended and the key strength of the candidates. Anything else is a distraction, which the recruiters do not mind leaving out and thereby creating a wrong impression.
Resume writing is a professional showcase of one’s ability to deliver when asked to do so by the company, once the candidate is in its payroll. If the document has been written properly, it will show that the candidate is serious enough for the job and not simply wasting the recruiters’ time and energy, and therefore the process should be done with lots of thoughts and deliberations.
