Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited was incorporated as extended arm of Indian railways on 27th September, 1999 in order to manage, professionalise and upgrade the hospitality and catering services at trains, stations and other locations. It is a public sector enterprise which regulates under the ministry of railways.
IRCTC is engaged in promotion of international as well as domestic tourism through maintenance and development of tour packages, hotels, publicity, information literature and global reservation systems. The company has excelled in making a mark at services of passengers like setup of food joints at railway stations, internet ticket booking, railway tour packages and RailNeer etc. it is also responsible for management of catering services on various trains like Shatabdi express, Rajdhani Express, Duronto, Mails and Express trains. Along with the these services it also serves in static catering units such as AVMs, book stalls, refreshment rooms, waiting rooms, ice cream and milk stalls and other eatery items for passengers.
IRCTC comes under the Miniratna category CPSE under the ministry of railways. It has its headquarters at New Delhi which is managed and headed by Managing Director. Along with managing director there is also a team of directors for catering services, tourism and marketing and finance with 9 group general managers. Indian railways have been divided into 5 different zones in order to manage such a vast network smoothly and minimum errors.
