ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) – Educating India
The Council of the Indian School Certification Examinations was established in 1959 by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (now detached). It is a private, non-Governmental Board of School Education in India that conducts Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) for class 10th. It is designed as per the New Education Policy 1986 (India) to provide an examination according to the course of general education using the language English.
What it is recognized as?
In 1973 the council was listed in the Delhi Education Act, 1973, and is now recognized as a council conducting public examinations.

There are about 1785 schools affiliated with the council of the Indian school certification examinations.
In how many subjects it can be conducted?
ICSE examination is being conducted in 64 written subjects including 23 Indian languages and 12 foreign languages. It has average pass percentage of 98.20% varying regionally and in abroad it has achieved a pass percentage of 100%. The subjects that are offered in the ICSE board are of three categories. The first category is of compulsory subjects that include English, History, Civics & Geography, and any Indian Language. The second category is for optional. One has to select only two subjects to attempt for in the board exams. This category includes subjects like Mathematics, Science, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Agricultural Science, Commercial Studies, Technical Drawing, A Modern Foreign Language, A Classical Language and Economics. And from the third category one has to select only one subject out of Computer Applications, Economic Applications, Commercial Applications, Art, Performing Arts, Home Science, Cookery, Fashion Designing, Physical Education, Technical Drawing Applications, Yoga, and Environmental Applications. The internal assessment by the schools also carries a 20% of the total board result.
Who should go for this board?
Students who wish to or plan to move abroad after a few years should get enrolled to an ICSE examination affiliated school. As this board curriculum focuses on strengthening English language. It also pays special interests in setting the basics of students so that they can really focus well in their higher studies.
Does it provide emphasis on training?
It conducts training on various education concerns and good teaching practice in class rooms. It organizes these training sessions on request basis and also to explain new syllabi thrusts. They also provide special teacher training to help them understand the syllabus.
What it has for children with differential abilities?
ICSE also allows students with special difficulty cases to attempt for the exam. As of now 807 of such cases attempted for the exam in 2013 out of which 652 were dyslexic, 37 visually challenged and 16 took their exams in hospital. 38 of these children passed with a pass percentage of 90%.
How they encourage teachers?
They host “The Derozio” awards for teachers and principals to promote a sense of recognition, support and achievement and to motivate them to work harder in shaping the future of young India.
Teachers from ICSE are also eligible to national awards given by the Government of India in recognition to meritorious services given by the outstanding teacher.
