The Dr. B. C. Roy Award is given every year by the Medical Council of India in memory of the great Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who is famous as Mahatma Gandhi’s friend and personal physician.
He founded the Indian Medical Association in 1928 and was also responsible for the establishment of the Medical Council of India. Dr. Roy was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1961 for his exceptional service to the nation.
The Dr. B. C. Roy Award was instituted in 1976 and is given in the following categories:
- Eminent Medical Person
- Statesmanship of the Highest Order in India
- Eminent person in Philosophy
- Medical man-cum-Statesman
- Eminent person in Science and Eminent person in Arts
The award is presented by the President of India on July 1, which marks the birth anniversary of Dr. B. C. Roy and is celebrated in India as the National Doctors’ Day.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and recipients are gifted a silver salver. Nominations for the prize are based on recommendations received from the Chief Ministers of various states, Chancellors of universities, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Deans of the Faculty of Medicine, Directors of the C.S.I.R., .C.M.R., and I.C.A.R., Indian Science Congress, National Organizations of the Profession and Member of the Medical Council.
The nominations should be supported by the following:
- A set of publications made by the candidate
- Curriculum vitae of the candidate
- A statement of work, achievement and accomplishments based on which the nomination was made
- A brief explanation or reason for which the nomination was made
The nominations are only accepted if they have the consent of the nominees concerned.
